How Trivial Is Trivial

چکیده

This question is, I feel, in the same kind of idiot category as how long is a piece of string? interviewed recently by a journalist planning to write an article about the women (like me) who conduct 'Auntie' columns in women's magazines, I was asked what proportion of the letters I received each week could be labelled trivial. Her eyebrows shot up when I said that in my view, no human problem was trivial?even the recurring one of the teenage girl who begs for advice about how to rekindle interest in her boy friend who has neglected for a whole week to ring her up. Of course, there are degrees of misery, but no human misery, I feel, can be shrugged off on the grounds of apparent triviality. The interesting question of the degrees of triviality caused me to become embroiled, a few months ago, with the angry wife of a doctor?a general practitioner in Essex. And the coldly furious correspondence resulted in the publication of one of my letters in The Lancet, which in turn involved me in further hot argument about triviality. The doctor's wife accused me of telling troubled readers to take what she described as 'trivial prob-lems' to their family doctor. "Do you really think,' wrote the aggressive lady (who described herself as horrified and even disgusted), 'that a doctor should be involved in petty domestic quarrels?' Furthermore, she pointed out, general practitioners are already overloaded with work and one of the reasons their surgeries are overcrowded is because of the gratuitous advice given to the public by people like me with no medical training. She stated that it is very difficult for people who are genuinely ill to get their doctors to treat them, on account of how the doctors are so busy dealing with what she described as 'minor emotional upsets'. The fact is that a large number of the people who write to me?a newspaper columnist and a stranger ?are middle-aged or elderly neurotics who would, in my view, never have reached the stage where they needed help from a stranger if they could have taken their 'petty domestic problems' and 'minor emotional upsets' to a doctor who would listen to them with sympathy and understanding. In the few years I have been running my advice column in a woman's magazine, I estimate that I have received something like a quarter of a …

Jordan derivation on trivial extension

Let A be a unital R-algebra and M be a unital A-bimodule. It is shown that every Jordan derivation of the trivial extension of A by M, under some conditions, is the sum of a derivation and an antiderivation.

On trivial ends of Cayley graph of groups

‎In this paper, first we introduce the end of locally finite graphs as an equivalence class of infinite paths in the graph. Then we mention the ends of finitely generated groups using the Cayley graph. It was proved that the number of ends of groups are not depended on the Cayley graph and that the number of ends in the groups is equal to zero, one, two, or infinity. For ...

The $w$-FF property in trivial extensions

‎Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K$‎, ‎$E$ be a $K$-vector space‎, ‎$R = D propto E$ be the trivial extension of $D$ by $E$‎, ‎and $w$ be the so-called $w$-operation‎. ‎In this paper‎, ‎we show that‎ ‎$R$ is a $w$-FF ring if and only if $D$ is a $w$-FF domain; and‎ ‎in this case‎, ‎each $w$-flat $w$-ideal of $R$ is $w$-invertible.

On derivations and biderivations of trivial extensions and triangular matrix rings

‎Triangular matrix rings are examples of trivial extensions‎. ‎In this article we determine the structure of derivations and biderivations of the trivial extensions‎, ‎and thereby we describe the derivations and biderivations of the upper triangular matrix rings‎. ‎Some related results are also obtained‎.

Skull-base Osteomyelitis: a Dreaded Complication after Trivial Fall and Inadequate Management

Introduction: Skull-based osteomyelitis is bony infection which generally originates from inadequately treated chronic infection, adjoining tissue infection or after trauma.Case: 11 month female child had a trivial fall while standing near a bucket. The child developed fracture of right clavicle and left orbital swelling which was inadequately treated. This resulted in in spread of infection to...

Existence of non-trivial solutions for fractional Schrödinger-Poisson systems with subcritical growth

In this paper, we are concerned with the following fractional Schrödinger-Poisson system:    (−∆s)u + u + λφu = µf(u) +|u|p−2|u|, x ∈R3 (−∆t)φ = u2, x ∈R3 where λ,µ are two parameters, s,t ∈ (0,1] ,2t + 4s > 3 ,1 < p ≤ 2∗ s and f : R → R is continuous function. Using some critical point theorems and truncation technique, we obtain the existence and multiplicity of non-trivial solutions with ...
